About Jeremy: |
It wasn’t until my year of 7th grade that I became interested in playing guitar. At the time, I was fully immersed in the Kurt Cobain school of music. My best friend Ian Ayers and I both had guitar playing aspirations, and from there, a dream was born. I started off by playing on my friends guitars. The guitars were usually acoustic, and it was a deterrent to play on them when you didn’t have large hands. The intro on ‘today’ by smashing pumpkins was the first thing I learned to play perfectly, but it would be a while before I was playing entire songs. I got my first electric guitar when I was 14, but it was didn’t have the best sound, and I couldn’t achieve much of what I wanted with it, so I sold it.
When I entered high school, I took a guitar class offered through the school, but I didn’t really get anything out of it. There was a local music instrument shop that I wanted to work for, and eventually had the job at 16. The manager was an awesome guitarist and the other coworker was a phenomenal bassist/pianist so I learned a lot from them. At the time, I had switched over to wanting to become a bassist and was developing my skills with that in mind. Eventually, I realized bass was not for me and switched back to guitar.
I got my first real guitar at 17 and developed a substantial repertoire of smashing pumpkins, blink 182 and 311 songs. My first guitar performance was the high school talent show and the band, Scooter, (consisting of Ian Ayers, Robbie Armijo, & David James) performed Weezer’s Buddy Holly and took first place. After receiving praise and recognition for that, the formation of a permanent band was quickly underway. My first bona fide band was User Friendly. Ian Ayers was on vocals and guitar, Robbie Armijo on drums, and Justin Johnson and I switching off on bass and lead guitar. We played cover songs consisting of blink 182, Sublime, Lit, Nada Surf, Weezer, and Super Deluxe at many school events. After high school ended, User Friendly informally disbanded.
While I was Virginia on vacation that summer, I began songwriting, and this was a wholly new feat for me having been performing covers thus far. Upon my return I worked to further cement the ideas and called upon Justin Johnson as a second guitarist and vocalist. We began to write together and the music was of an alternative/ pop punk variety. Justin and I both sang and I eventually brought in Drew Dowell to bring percussive thunder to the mix. The three of us rehearsed regularly, particularly at Justin’s house. His brother was a bassist, but he not interested in the music we were making until Justin and I brought some new, heavier material to the table. We then formed my second band, Kinetic Zero. We rehearsed steadily and only played publicly twice, once for the local skate park opening, and then for the high school’s year-end bash. After being cut loose from the band, mainly due to creative differences, I had a lot to think about.
I had a period of time where I was lost and did a lot of soul searching. I knew when I reemerged, I had to improve my lyrical and sound quality, and this meant my writing style had to be severely overhauled. This lead to the birth of my third band, Astral Kinetics, the first real idea of what music I would make. I wrote the lyrics and music for a dozen songs and began looking for a way to record them. I sought out Ben Johnston to play drums, and with him, came Ian McKamey who played bass. We recorded a 12-song demo over the course of a few weeks. The music for the album was pretty strong, but the lyrical quality, as well as the singing, had to be drastically improved. I was so burned out from single-handedly taking on the writing, and recording process that I debated quitting writing music altogether.
Instead, I decided to take up play drums. I had wanted to play drums since I was 15, but had no rhythm to speak of. After some time had passed, I had a new sense of strength and determination. I decided it was time I took what new material I had been working on and whatever older material was salvageable and revise it to fit my new vision. The fourth evolution I had was thequintessence. It was a restatement of sorts of what I wanted to say and how I wanted the music to sound. During the evolution of this creation, I met up with Andrew Flanders where we decided to join forces and become my fifth band, echoes of mars.

| About Ben: |
Ben played guitar for about six weeks when he was eight years old, after which time he tired of the Twilight Zone theme song and budding carpal tunnel. He traded the axe in for wood-chopping. Ben was blessed to have a father in the local music scene, who would foster his harmonic dreams and aspirations, and let him grow his hair to any length. He has been playing shows around the Seattle area since he was 16 years old, sneaking in to bars where necessary. Pitchfork begat Tuusk begat Celestial Bliss begat Soul Fish begat Smokin' Gun begat Sound Theory begat IDM begat Echoes of Mars. He enjoys playing a wide variety of music, sans country and perhaps polka. Ben is allergic to these, attributable to bouts of outright anger, fits of fidgeting, met with periods of quiet melancholy when he hears the aforementioned genres.
Ben would like to thank and acknowledge every musician and friend who has graced him with a chance to learn and grow (spiritually, mentally, physically) using the finest language he's found.
